The history of Bad Hofgastein goes back a long way. The place was the center of silver and gold mining in Roman times. The Romans also paved the way across the Korntauern, on which tropical fruits and wine, among other things, were later exchanged for gold and silver. Bad Hofgastein was also a central point in the High Middle Ages when it came to the exchange of goods between Austria and Italy. Since Bad Hofgastein is located at the widest point of the valley, the settlement became the main town of Gastein. Emperor Franz I gave Gastein the right to purchase thermal water from the springs, and on August 23, 1828, the Emperor approved the construction of a thermal water pipeline. From then on, the place was also given the addition of a spa. Today, 1000m3 of thermal water flow to Hofgastein every day. The history has been visibly preserved even today through numerous listed objects, such as the moated castle, the Kaiser Franz Joseph water pipe, the vicarage, which was already mentioned in a document in 1466, or the Annenkapelle, which was built in 1801.
